FSC FORESTS TEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

FSC is an international non-profit organisation established in 1993, the goal of which is to support environmentally correct, socially beneficial and profitable management in forestry worldwide. It was formed at the initiative of environmental groups such as World Wide Fund for Nature, Friends of the Earth, and others...

The reason for its establishment was ongoing over exploitation of tropical forests, as well as governments' in ability to adopt rules for their rescue.

Importance, goals, and characteristics of forest certification:

  • Certification as a market tool supporting the improvement of forest management;
  • Nature-friendly forest management;
  • Economically healthy forestry is good for the forest;
  • Certification is a market tool used to reward sound forest management;
  • Independent third party certification supports the voluntariness of the process;
  • It is a useful tool, by which the market rewards sound environmental performance;
  • It helps provide access to good markets where there is demand for certified wood;
  • It demonstrates obligation towards quality, social and environmental values;

The assumption is that forest certification will mitigate adversetendencies in the relationship between LH and the wood processing industry, as it is in their mutual interest to be ableengage in competition. The future belongs to the companies focusing on customer values and developing loyalty of the customer to thecompany and of the company to the customer.
